Lucinda Grange has an interesting hobby. It's been called stunt climbing, thrill seeking and urban exploring.
We met at a small New York City coffee shop in the East Village called, The Adventure Café. Perfectly named for our talk. "We're all confined by barriers," she says. "I'm going outside of the box turning the urban jungle into my jungle." With her camera in hand, and sometime fellow adventurers along for company, she has climbed and roamed dozens of well-known attractions and landmarks around the world. The eagles atop the Chrysler Building in New York City, Notre Dame in Paris, the Great Pyramid in Giza, Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, as well as hidden sewer passages in Berlin, and Kings Reach Tower in London to name just a few. All the while being mindful to not get caught by security and in some cases averting jail time. She is a part of a unique group of adventurers who climb famous bridges, roam the underground tunnels and perching themselves on structures high above us. When she was just 12 years old, she had her first taste for adventure at a local quarry in England. Soon after she was climbing local bridges. "The first time was the hardest," she says. "But it taught me that I could do something more dangerous the next time." The more she did it, the more rewarding it became for her. Although Lucinda doesn't encourage others to do what she does, she emphasizes the importance of value in exploring life outside of our comfort zones. "Start by camping on rooftops as a great way to connect with your city, where the building lights become your stars." She wants us to look at the environment around us differently. Going to the end of the subway platform and looking down the tracks to imagine what else is there. Or visiting the roof of your office building to see your city from a new view. Lucinda feels that by doing these micro adventures, people will get a more personal connection to their surroundings and learn more about themselves. "Turn fear into curiosity or excitement and appreciate the feelings that come with it." This conversation took place in the Spring of 2018 in New York City.
